Living Hyphen is a community that uses different forms of media to reshape constructs and amplify the voices of many oppressed and hyphenated individuals. Recently, they launched their second magazine issue, ‘Resistance Across Generations’. It is completely filled from front to back of storytelling that stretches beyond many families and intersections of identity. The magazine features a collection of very vulnerable and beautiful short stories, poetry, photography, illustration, and much more!
Our Art Director, Julien Balbontin, was included with a digital illustration piece called ‘Ten Carabao’. The subject of the illustration is ten carabao of three different colours running in one direction with the line art overlapping, until it doesn’t. The piece is based on the passing of Julien’s mother and grandmother on separate occasions within a year and what it has meant to her to move on. Ten Carabao is only one example of many other touching and vulnerable generational stories that are captured in the magazine.
I see my mother and grandmother simultaneously when I look in the mirror and this is my first piece about them. This piece is about my mother, my grandmother, and me, altogether and separately. It’s an honour to be included in this beautiful publication!
